Seven persons were injured after a 5.8-magnitude quake struck the same region early in the morning. The tremor struck at 2:43 a.m. at Jinggu County, Pu'er City.
The quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
Transportation, telecommunications and power supply facilities have remained in operation, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Zhang Jianguo, of Yunnan Disaster Prevention Research Institute, believed the quake was a strong aftershock of an earlier one on October 7 that killed one person and injured over 300.
Epicenters of the two quakes were 10 kilometers apart, Xinhua reported.
"After the previous quake, people at the zone were evacuated," he said, adding that the aftershock would not result in heavy casualties. The tremor lasted for less than one minute.
