Kapurthala: 'Thehkanjala Model Jail', which has been constructed at the cost of Rs 100 crore, is still waiting to house its first inmate. The bad planning on part of the administration has not only left the model jail unused, but has also inflated the cost of the entire project by Rs 21 crore.

The biggest impediment in inaugurating the jail, cleared as a joint jail of Jalandhar and Kapurthala in 2009, is the lack of an approach road to the jail. The release of funds for the link road is pending for months, delaying the inauguration in the process.

Now the authorities are planning to use the main of an industrial region close by for approaching the jail.

In absence of funds, some crucial construction work like laying pipeline from the water treatment plant in the jail is still pending.
The Jagran team visiting the jail found that the jail still awaits connection from distribution of power.

As the administration wants Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal to inaugurate the jail, the opening is set to get delayed because the inauguration function can be held only after the approach road is laid.
