Koide was born on March 13, 1903 and when he was asked about his secret of long life, Koide said, "the best thing is to not overdo," as well as he recommended not to smoke or drink.

Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura also presented flowers to Koide and congratulated him for his formal designation. The ceremony took place yesterday in a nursing home which was attended by his three children and two grandchildren among others.

Mr. Koide worked as a tailor when he was younger and still he can read the newspaper without glasses. The last oldest man was Sakari Momoi from Fukushima prefecture. He passed away on July 5 aged 112.
