Jammu: Twelve people were killed and 68 injured when an over-loaded mini bus sliped the road and plunged into a gorge in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Tuesday.

The bus was on its way from Latti to Chenani, when the driver lost control over the vehicle, police said, adding the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the into the 330-feet deep gorge at Choka Nallah, about 125-kms from Jammu.

Six persons died on the spot and five others succumbed on their way to hospital in Chenani, they said, adding one person died in the hospital, taking the death toll to 12.

Police and CRPF, besides local people, launched a rescue operation and all the injured have been hospitalised.

Out of the 68 injured, 12 persons were airlifted to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here, police said, adding the death toll was likely to increase.

Meanwhile, State Governor N N Vohra and Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma expressed grief over the incident and directed the Chief Medical Officer Udhampur to provide urgent medical aid to the injured.
