New Delhi: About 1,300 doctors across the country will conduct at least one corrective or cosmetic surgery free of cost on July 15, the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India announced on Friday.

July 15 will also be observed as Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Day.

"1300 plastic surgeons across the country will conduct free of cost surgery for either correcting birth defects, post burn problems, hand injuries, deformities related to trauma
and cancer, reconstruction to aesthetic surgery," Dr S Raja Sabapathy, President of APSI said.

He made the announcement after meeting Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Dr Sabapathy said that there was least awareness among the people on the possibilities of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

"Most people think of plastic surgery as cosmetic surgery meant only for beautification. This move was taken to increase the awareness of the spectrum of work done by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and also to enable the members to reach out to the masses," Dr Rakesh Khazanchi of the association said.
