Lucknow: Several government schools in Uttar Pradesh lack adequate sanitation system. According to a government report, at least 12926 schools in 71 districts of the state are devoid of facilities like toilets or bathrooms.

While hearing a PIL filed by Delhi government’s Environment and Consumer Protection Foundation, the Supreme Court on January 13, had instructed all the primary schools in Uttar Pradesh to upgrade their sanitation system. Following the court’s directives, UP Chief Secretary Anoop Mishra wrote to all district collectors in this regard.

A government report on the sanitation facilities in state’s primary schools racked up the glaring deficiencies in running the Centre sponsored Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan in the state.

In Lucknow, at least 132 schools which are functional since 1972 lack toilets.

Ironically, many of the school authorities are citing the excuses like lack of funds or lack of space inside their premises for non- availability of proper toilets in their schools.
