Beijing: Seventeen people were killed on Wednesday in a coal mine accident in southwest China's Yunnan province, authorities said.

At 2.15 pm on Wednesday, an accident of coal and gas outburst took place in a shaft of the Shangchang coal mine in Huangnihe township of Fuyuan, reported an agency.

Sixty-six miners were underground when the accident took place and 49 of them escaped from the mine, according to preliminary investigation.
