Koraput: At least 18 Dusshera revellers were killed and 14 others injured nine of them seriously, when the tipper truck in which they were returning home overturned at Dasamantapur in Orissa's Koraput district on Friday, police said.
The mishap occurred this morning when the victims were returning home after watching a 'jatra' or folk theatre at Dasamantapur, about 60 km from here, Koraput district Superintendent of Police Anoop Sahu said.
The victims, including seven women and eight children, were crushed beneath the vehicle after it overturned and local people had to pull out the victims, Sahu said.
While 14 persons died on the spot, four of the seriously hurt succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
While the injured were admitted to nearby hospitals, the seriously injured shifted to the district headquarters hospital at Koraput where their condition was stated to be critical, the police said.
The victims belonged to Bedhapadar, Mangalaguda, Bangaguda and Sembitotaguda under Dasamantapur police station.
Senior officials of the district administration and police rushed to the spot to ensure proper rescue operation.
