This is the sixth instance when India qualified for the last four stage of the prestigious quadrennial tournament.

Here is the list of India's World Cup semifinals.

1983 World Cup:

India, which was considered as minnows during this World Cup, went out to upstage the mighty west Indians to win the tournament under the leadership of great all-rounder Kapil Dev. India defeated Australia in the semi-finals to set up a title clash with West Indies.

1987 World Cup:

Played in the sub-continent, India was considered as hot favorites to win the 1987 World Cup. However, India suffered a loss at the hands of England in the last four stage. Ironically, another sub-continent team and co-host Pakistan was also knocked out from the World Cup after a defeat against Asutrallia in the last four stage. It was Australia which emerged as the ultimate winner in that tour.

1996 World Cup:

Co-hosted by India, this World Cup has witnessed batting great Sachin Tendulkar's heroics. India, which was considered one of the best team to win the tournament, lost in the semi-finals against Sri Lanka. Played at the historic Eden Garden in Kolkata, Chasing a target of 251 on a square turning wicket, India were reduced to 120 for eight. At the fall of the 8th Indian wicket, sections of the crowd vented their disgust with the state of the match by setting fire to some areas of the stands and throwing fruit and water bottles onto the field. The match was briefly stopped and when play was about to resume, the crowd again threw bottles at the deep fielders. The match referee Clive Lyod stopped the game and later it was Sri Lanka by default.

2003 World Cup:

India played superbly and lost only two matches, both against Australia, in whole tournament. The Sourav Ganguly-led Indian team failed to pass last hurdle and ended runner up in the prestigious tournament.
India had defeated Kenya in the semi-final to set up a title clash against mighty Australia, which emerged winner of the  quadrennial tournament.

2011 World Cup:

India, which eventually bagged the coveted title in this event, had defeated arch-rival Pakistan in the semi finals of the tournament. This was the second time in the history of World Cup, when India knocked out Pakistan. Earlier, in the 1996, Mohammad Azharuddin -led India defeated Pakistan in the quarter finals to sent them home.
 
2015 World Cup:

Under the leadership of cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India defeated another sub-continent team Bangladesh by 109 runs to book a place in the semi finals of the ongoing event.
