Chandigarh: As many as 21 encroachments have been creating a hurdle in the much acclaimed Golden Temple Corridor Project in Amritsar. Though hotels and guest houses are prohibited in this area, many of such encroachment sites are being used for commercial purposes in form of a guest house or a hotel.

The matter was brought to the notice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court by the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar who also gave assurance to take action at the earliest in this regard. He told the court that 21 encroachments have been identified so far and notices have been sent to the persons concerned.

Sarabjit Singh of Human Rights organization through a Public Interest Litigation had informed the court about the encroachments on which the latter asked the DC to submit the reply.

According to the PIL, one Rajiv Khanna had sought the information under the RTI about commercial activities being carried out at the Golden Temple Corridor including the hotels and guest houses. He had also questioned, who had provided the NOC for these constructions and which officials cleared the maps of these buildings.

The information related to map clearance was given, but later it was revealed that the illegal commercial buildings had domestic power connections.

Since the Golden Temple Corridor is meant to enhance the beauty of the Golden Temple, the PIL was filed to ask for action against the illegal encroachments and to identify the officials involved in the crime.

Meanwhile, the High Court has declared the next hearing on the issue on February 19.
