It took place when a group of people led by Salafist sheikhs set on fire Shiite residences in the small village of Zawyat Abu Musalam in Giza Governorate, killing four people. Shehata was visiting one of the families in the village when the attack happened.

The Cairo court sent the defendants to jail yesterday. The incident was videotaped and went viral on social networks.

The clip that showed one of the victims being beaten and dragged through the streets stirred up anger among people. The attack had come a few days after the ouster of Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi.
