The CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the allotment of 2G spectrum during late Pramod Mahajan's tenure as Telecom Minister unambiguously proves that mobile companies were obliged in the same way as they have been done in the UPA regime. The investigation has been started by the in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's direction to probe the allocation of 2G spectrum before the tenure of former Telecom Minister A Raja, who has been a mastermind of the spectrumgate. It is profound irony that malpractices done in between 2001-03 are now being put under scanner. The CBI snooped down at the residences of ex-Telecom Secretary Shyamal Ghosh, former Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) JR Gupta with extending its tentacles to telecom giants Airtel and Vodafone, but it does not seem to have any merit because nothing tangible is probably going to be out as investigations have started after a long gap and it may not be certain for investigating agency to find any evidence in this case. The objection raised by the BJP against the CBI’s action is condemnable, because no one can claim about the method of the allocation of 2G during the NDA regime whether it was transparent and norms were followed impeccably.

It wouldn’t be hyperbolic to say that the Telecom Ministry has become synonymous with irregularities and scams, and it is infact corroborated by the fact of imprisonment of former Telecom Minister Sukhram for the five years and ex-Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran facing 2G fire as well. Surprisingly, despite the UPA government being familiar with the chronology of irregularities and rot corroding the Telecom Ministry, the Central establishment has not done concrete to insulate it from graft. It is known to all how the UPA government initially gave clean chit to A Raja, despite being alleged to have scripted the saga of 2G bungling and after the Centre drew flak from all quarters for shielding him, it gave green signal for investigation in the case later on. It cannot be rule out that the CBI’s action against the irregularities in the 2G allocation during NDA regime is a bid to tarnish and weaken the voice of the Opposition which put the ruling establishment on the tenterhooks regarding scams and scandals.  Whether the accused of the 2G scam are sent to gallows, but it has become obvious that there is no strict measure in the country to investigate scams and scandals properly and punish the culprits denting the image of the nation.
