Ballia: 41 pilgrims were on Monday killed when a tractor-trolley in which they were travelling overturned in a waterlogged ditch in Nagra area of the district.

The incident occurred this morning when the tractor trolley carrying around 60 pilgrims to Sati Mata Temple in the district turned turtle near Gauapar village, police said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital, they said.

Expressing grief over the loss of lives, UP Chief Minister Mayawati announced a compensation of Rs one lakh for family members of each of the deceased, Rs 50,000 each for the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 each for the others injured in the mishap.

She directed officials to ensure free medical aid to the injured.
