Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has reserved five Municipal Corporations for women while it is undecided on the remaining 13 civic bodies.

According to sources, the Mayors in Aligarh and Meerut are to be from SC/STs while Saharanpur, Jhansi and Muradabad have been reserved for the OBC candidates.

It is expected that in the civic body elections, OBCs and SC/STs will have one seat each and there will be three seats reserved for the general category.

It has been decided that in the Mayor elections, reservation for backward classes will not exceed 27 percent. However, 2001 census revealed that zones headed by Mayors had 12.95 percent of backward class population. A report in 2005 also stated 25 per cent of the total population was OBCs and SCs/STs.

According to the rules, women should get a reservation of 33 percent. So out of two seats of SC/ST and three seats of OBCs, the general would get one seat from each category.

In fact there is provision for reservation of Mayor in Municipal election and it will be in proportion to the population of SC/ST coming under all civic bodies of the region.

It is worth mentioning that in last elections only four seats were reserved for women as there were only 12 Municipal Corporations. So in order to reach out to the 33 percent mark of reservation in this election, five seats have been reserved for women.
