Kabul, Jan 10 (Agencies): The Afghan Police confiscated over 700 kg of narcotics and apprehended 54 people on charges of drug trafficking, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

"Counter-narcotics police have discovered 737 kg of narcotics during operations in the country over the past one week and arrested 54 drug smugglers," the statement said.

The contraband includes 293 kg of poppy, 329 kg of heroin and 115 kg of hashish, Xinhua reported.

The police team also destroyed poppy farms in 1,566 acres of land in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province on Saturday.

Although, 20 out of Afghanistan's 34 provinces have been announced to be poppy-free, the country is still producing 90 per cent of the world's raw materials used in manufacturing heroin, according to reports.
