New Delhi: Around 5,500 acres of land owned by 88 public sector units have been encroached by slum dwellers, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.

"There are 88 PSUs whose land has been encroached. 5,500 acres of such land has been encroached by slum dwellers," Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Selja said in Rajya Sabha.

She said during Question Hour that these PSUs belong to 21 ministries and her ministry has already written to the states seeking their suggestions on slum development.

"The (Housing) Ministry has also taken up the matter with the Ministry of Railways to arrive at a policy solution to redevelop/relocate the slums on land belonging to it, under the Rajiv Awas Yojana,” she said.

To a question, Selja said that it would be difficult to fix any time-frame for completing redevelopment work of slums on encroached lands since it is a ‘sensitive’ issue.

Selja said guidelines have been circulated to the states for preparing innovative pilot projects.
