The tremor struck 22 kilometres southwest of Ashkasham, 300 kilometres northeast of the Afghan capital Kabul, at a depth of 92.4 kilometres.

According to the National Seismological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicentre of the quake was 86 kms deep and located somewhere in the border area of Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
Tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and the national capital. There was no information about any damage to property or loss of life till the last reports came in.
