Lucknow: In order to ensure fair and peaceful elections in the states, 703 troops of central forces have been allotted by the Centre for the purpose. The Union home Ministry informed the government in this regard.

While 170 troops will reach the states within a week, the remaining will arrive by January 25. For the record, the Centre had provided 270 troops of the forces to the states for assembly elections in 2007.

According to the sources, in a proposal to the Centre, the Centre had asked for 1,070 troops for the polls. However, after negotiations with the Election Commission, the Union Home Ministry decided to provide 703 troops of which 178 troops of CRPF, 147 of BSF, 125 of CISF, 27 of RPF, 33 of SSB and 150 troops of PAC for the elections.

The Election Commission will be informed about the details of the deployment of forces in districts by Monday evening.

The forces will patrol selective areas of the districts before their deployment at the polling booths and will also be stationed at check posts to recover any illegal liquor or ammunition, the sources said.
