The Bal Sudhar Grah (Children Reformation Home), located in Suraj Kund was reportedly 'overcrowded' and had juveniles from Meerut city and nearby districts.

The children around 3 am had used a cloth-rope to jump over the jail’s kitchen wall, the rear side of the premises to escape, the police official said.

He added the jail was not being guarded by any police official at that time and also as the wall was quite high.

Two guards of the rehabilitation center, however, have been suspended for failing to perform their duties.

Superintendent of Police (City) Om Prakash Singh said the police are yet to investigate whether it was a case of negligence. The police have continued its search operation in the city and nearby areas.

The juvenile jail in Meerut is a home to 185 children at present, of which 56 had been shifted to Bulandshahr city and several others were about to be shifted in Ghaziabad.
