Continuing with a string of pre-budget discussions and talks, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday met a delegation of the agriculture sector. Jaitley assured them that the growth of the agriculture sector is one of top most priorities of the government.
During his meeting, the delegation urged Jaitley to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops by 150 percent.
The agri expert also recommended the government to start ‘Kisan TV’ – a channel aimed at making the farmers aware and enlightened about the nitty-gritty of farming.
Apart from these, they also suggested the government to focus more on enhancing the irrigation facilities and several schemes to interlink rivers in the country.
Jaitley during the meet paid attention to all the suggestions and demands of the delegation in an earnest manner.
He also assured them that the NDA government would leave no stones unturned in providing every possible aid to the agriculture sector.
Jaitley said the agriculture sector provides maximum employment to people in our country but its contribution in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in recent years has seen a downfall trend.
He added that the concerns of the agriculture sector are of prime importance to the government.
Apart from Jaitley, Minister of State for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman and Finance Secretary Arvind Mayaram and several other top officials from the department were also present during the meeting.
Well-known Indian geneticist MS Swaminathan and Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Dr S Ayappan along with dozen more representatives from top agriculture organisations were also present at the meeting.
