Ranbir Singh Hooda (1914-2009)

Born in 1914, Ranbir Singh Hooda was a freedom fighter and Congress leader.  He was a member of Constituent Assembly and father of present Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda born in 1947.

Bhupinder is credited with leading the Congress to power in state Assembly for two consecutive times after 1972.

Ranbir Singh Hooda’s grandson Deepender Singh Hooda is a two time Member of Parliament from Rohtak constituency and is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from the same seat.

Devi Lal (1914-2001)

A well-known name in the national political circuit, Devi Lal was the deputy prime minister from 1989-1999. He was seen as a pro-farmer leader and was affectionately known as Tau (Uncle).

His son Omprakash Chautala, born in 1935, is the leader of principal opposition party in Haryana Assembly – Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), who has been in headlines over the past one year for alleged involvement in teachers’ recruitment scam, for which he has been handed out an imprisonment of 10 years.

Devi Lal’s grandson Ajay Singh Chautala, born in 1961, has been an MLA and MP. A co-accused in the teachers’ recruitment scam along with his father Omprakash Chautala, he is presently out on an interim bail.

His another grandson Abhay Chautala, born in 1963, has been the president of Indian Olympic Association and is presently overseeing the poll preparations of INLD in the absence of his father and elder brother.

Bansilal (1927-2006)

Born in 1927, he has been the Union defence minister and chief minister of Haryana. He is also regarded as the architect of ‘New Haryana’ by many.

He floated Haryana Vikas Party in 1996 after ending association with Congress. His son Ranbir Singh Mahendra has been the president of Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and also a member of legislative assembly.

Another son – Surendra, is a two-time MP from Bhiwani. Bansilal passed away in a plane crash.

His wife Kiran Chaudhary is an MLA and daughter Shruti Chaudhary is an MP from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh constituency. Shruti is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from the same seat.

Bhajan Lal (1930-2011)

Born in 1930, Bhajan Lal was a prominent Congress leader in Haryana. He was a two-time chief minister and upset over appointment of Bhupinder Singh Hooda as Haryana CM, he floated his own political party – Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC).

His son Kuldeep Bishnoi is the chief of HJC and the party is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections along with Bharatiya Janata Party. Kuldeep’s wife Renuka is an MLA from Adampur.

Bhajan Lal’s another son Chandra Mohan has been in news for all ‘wrong’ reasons, mainly due to turmoil in his personal life.
