Hearing a PIL questioning the legal sanctity of Aadhar card, the Apex Court observed that UID number is not compulsory for getting LPG and telephone connections.

Notably, the government had earlier said that it has not made UID number mandatory for availing its subsidies schemes. “The government has not made Aadhar card mandatory for availing subsidized schemes,” Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla had said in the Rajya Sabha.

“If any government enterprises are doing so, it will be rectified,” he had said.

There were reports that UID number is mandatory to get the benefit of several schemes of Central and state governments.
