“Most of Aamir's films release during Christmas and they have done well. Though we wanted to release the film in June but then we thought Christmas is perfect to release the film," P.K.’s director Rajkumar Hirani had earlier said.

Action-thriller ‘Dhoom 3’ starring Khan in the lead role was also released on 19th December last year and it went on to become the highest grossing film ever in the history of Indian cinema.

In 2008, Aamir’s ‘Ghajini’ was released just a day before Christmas. The action psychological thriller was the biggest hit of that year and became the first Bollywood film to cross the 100 crore mark.

In 2009, "3 Idiots" was released on 25th December,  which created 200 crore mark at domestic box office.

According to Hirani, the festive season was also the reason to shift the release date as more people would be able to watch the film.

‘P.K.’ also features actor Sanjay Dutt, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput.
