Ghaziabad: Hundreds of jewellers on Monday disrupted rail services here, protesting the proposed increase in import duty on gold and imposition of excise duty on unbranded jewellery.
About 500 traders and jewellers raising slogans against Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee blocked the track at the railway station here, disrupting movement of over a dozen trains for about an hour.
Shatabdi Express and Shalimar Express were among over a dozen trains which remained halted at the station and nearby area for about an hour.
Local civil police and railway police resorted to lathicharge to remove the protesting jewellers and traders from railway track.
SSP Raghubir Lal said that no damage to railway properties was done by the protesting traders due to heavy deployment of force.
