Shillong, Jan 08 (Agencies): Meghalaya's East Garo Hills administration has ‘strongly advised’ MLAs and ministers of Meghalaya not to visit Assam without prior permission from the administration.

"Travel from Garo Hills to Guwahati and Shillong through Assam has been strongly advised against," the East Garo Hills administration informed after taking the decision on Friday night.

The move came after former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma, his daughter Union Minister Agatha Sangma and son Conrad Sangma, who is also Meghalaya's Opposition leader, faced mob fury in Assam's Goalpara on Friday evening when they were on a visit to the relief camps set up to house people affected in the ethnic clashes.

Around 500 people gheraoed the convoy of the Garo family at Sotomatia village and protested against the ongoing violence, asking the leaders to get out of their vehicle.

Uprooted trees were laid on the road to prevent their movement. Goalpara DC PK Goswami and SP Luish Aind had to rush to the spot with Army troopers.

"It was shocking to see men and women suddenly get swayed by anger and pick up lethal weapons to threaten those who came in peace,” said PA Sangma.
