Jammu:PDP chief Mebooba Mufti on Tuesday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of raising the issue of AFSPA revocation to divert attention from the alleged custodial killing of National Conference worker Haji Sayeed Yusuf Shah.

"Sensitive and important issue of AFSPA was raised only to divert attention of the people from NC worker Haji Sayeed Yusuf Shah's custodial killing, as it has exposed corruption in the government as well as in the ruling party," Mufti said at public meetings in Rajouri district.

She accused Omar of mishandling the issue of Armed Forces Special Power Act and creating confusion over it.

Reiterating resolve of her party to revoke AFSPA from the state, she said in 2007 when her party had raised this issue all political parties including NC had asked PDP leaders to surrender their security before demanding revocation.

The state government on November 18 had appointed one-man commission under retired Supreme Court judge H S Bedi to probe the custodial death.

Yusuf, also known as Haji Yusuf, was arrested on September 28 for allegedly duping people of money promising them government jobs, MLC seats and ministerial berths, citing his proximity with top NC leadership. He died the next day in police custody.
