New Delhi: Going by the adage ‘the journey of thousand miles begins with a single step’, the Congress Ministers in Union Cabinet hailing from Uttar Pradesh will be following the footsteps of Rahul Gandhi to strengthen the party base in the state before the 2012 Assembly elections.

Under the party’s ‘Pol Khol’ campaign to start after August 15, all the Congress Union Ministers belonging to UP will visit the rural areas to expose the tall claims of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government and apprise people of the projects being run in the state by the UPA.

The responsibility to lead the campaign has been assigned to Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal and Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid. Among other Union Ministers from UP to participate in ‘Pol Khol’ include Jitin Prasada, RPN Singh, Aditya Jain and Beni Prasad Verma.

With emphasis on their respective Ministries, the Congress leaders will make a detailed presentation of the Union Government projects being carried out in the state.

During the campaign, the thrust would be on the UPA’s flagship schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), road constructions among others.

Union Minister of state for Road Transport and National Highways, Jitin Prasada would inform the people about the obstacles created by the state government which delayed six important projects related to roads.

A former Samajwadi Party leader and now a Congress parliamentarian cum Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma will be a key factor for the party in the efforts to win the confidence of the OBC community.

In an effort to ensure a positive response from the people to the Pol Khol campaign, the Congress has directed the state unit to instruct party members to undertake publicity measures.
