Kolkata: Stepping up ante against the BJP for broaching up the issue of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins date for death penalty was fixed, Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of creating a communal divide over the matter,

“The assassins of Rajiv Gandhi have still not being hanged and the BJP is raising the issue of Afzal Guru,” he said.

Addressing the 58th foundation day of Chhatra Parishad, the party's student wing, AICC member Shakeel Ahmed said the Congress was striving hard to curb corruption.

“The UPA government has always taken swift action against its ministers who have been alleged of corruption. But, the BJP and CPI (M) have done nothing with regard to their own tainted leaders,” he added.

He said the BJP has no right to speak on corruption as they have taken no further action against former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa accused in Rs 16,000 crore mining scam apart from removing him from the CM’s post.

Targetting the CPI (M), Ahmed said there were many graft cases against Kerala CPI (M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan.

“Even the kith and kin of former CPI (M) MP were arrested in criminal cases and still the party did not initiate any action against him,” he added.

Senior leaders including Jagdish Tytler and Manas Bhunia were also present on the occasion.
