The council held its first meeting on February 9th and expressed serious concerns over government’s negligent attitude towards sportspersons who bring laurels to the country.

Among other recommendations by council members are:

1. Cash prize should be equal for every medal-winning athlete. Prize money should not differ from state to state. It should be awarded on the basis of athlete's performance.

2. A campaign named 'Sports For All' should be run like 'Food For All'. Under this campaign, 10 lakh sports clubs will be set up in the entire country to give exposure to rural and financially weak sports enthusiasts.

3. With mega sporting event Rio Olympic just around the corner, council expects government to take necessary steps to ease training of athletes and resolve administrative hurdles in sports like boxing, which has no governing body currently.

4. States and corporate houses were advised to adopt one or two disciplines and support them to Olympic level. For this, they should be given a tax exemption.

5. Council also focussed on the need to spread awareness about doping and making yoga a compulsory discipline in schools.

Athletes like PT Usha and Sachin Tendulkar are part of the council. Unfortunately, the cricket legend could not attend this crucial meeting as he missed the flight due to dense fog.
