New Delhi: Making a breakthrough in the field of drug research, All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has devised a new medicine to give a better treatment to the people suffering for Alzheimer's disease.

The drug which has been discovered by Dr Mahaveer Golechha, a senior research fellow of department of pharmacology, is said to have been derived from citrus fruit that can be beneficial for the Alzheimer patients.

Dr Golechha has been awarded with the prestigious USA Young Investigator Scholarship Award from Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation for the achievement.

"Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that generally affects the elderly. Till date, the treatment was symptomatic but this new drug will be highly effective with no side effect," Golechha said.

"The drug, Naringin, is a bioflavonoid. It works in multiple ways, like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic. This drug has been discovered from citrus fruits," he said.
The Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, an international journal of Japanese Society of Pharmacology, has published the research work of the AIIMS.
