The store, which will be run by the Central government's Hindustan Latex Limited, will supply generic drugs to the patients. The lists of drugs have been finalized after consultations with heads of all departments.

Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Dr DK Sharma said, “A free pharmacy had been conceptualized a long time ago. It will start functioning within a week.”

According to the authorities, this pharmacy will be the centralized medicine supply system across different departments and specialty centers at the institute. It will help the pharmacology department monitor adverse drug reactions, prescription patterns and drug efficacy.

The move comes on the heels of the closure of a subsidized private round-the-clock pharmacy. After a series of complaints against it regarding substitution of prescribed drugs with costlier items, the pharmacy had to be shut down.
