Two time national champion Arvind Bhat was in strong form with a Grand Prix Gold title win last week. However, Kumar managed to came out on top 22-20, 23-21.

According to sources, the match was a see-saw battle as fortunes fluctuated from one player to the other. Kumar, ranked no. 301, displayed some good finishing and clinched the 38-minute thriller.

Kumar, who surprisingly qualified for the main draw, will now take on world no. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in his first round on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in the women's qualifiers, India's Sayali Gokhale, Mudra Dahinje, Shruti Mundada and China's Xun (F) Liu made it to the main draw.
