Tripoli: Al Qaeda has sent experienced militants to Libya in an effort to form an armed group amid the fighting that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, a TV channel reported, citing an unnamed Libyan source briefed by Western counter-terrorism officials.

Among the jihadists was a fighter who had been released from jail in Britain after a brief detention. He was sent to Libya on the orders of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and has been there since May, the report said.

He has formed a group of around 200 fighters recruited along the Egyptian border.
