Chandigarh: In the wake of sky rocketing prices of gold ornaments and other expensive articles, All India Vyapar Mandal General Secretary and Haryana state president, Bajrang Dass Garg has urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to withdraw the excise duty on such articles.

In a letter written to the PM, Garg said, “The gold merchants have unanimously decided to go on strike for seven days. So, the jewellers have undergone a huge loss. Even the state and the Central government exchequer had to incur loss in this regard.”

He further stated that the goldsmiths take the gold from the bank to make the ornaments and also more than 70 percent public use the old golds to make new ornaments.

The worst affected would be the labourers, Garg added. He requested that no kind of excise duty should be levied on such branded ornaments.
