Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court has given a three week time to Uttar Pradesh government to reply on a PIL for issuing a helpline number and formation of a separate women police unit in the wake of sudden spurt of sexual harassment cases in the state.

While hearing the PIL, the bench of Justices SS Chauhan and Vedpal reserved the order and asked the state government to make its reply within the stipulated time span. The next hearing on the PIL filed by petitioner Prince Lenin would be after four weeks.

Defending the UP government, Additional Advocate General argued that the state already has a special cell for women and helpline number to take immediate action in such cases. He did not fail to mention, the issues related to females were taken up in ‘Mahila-Thana’.

The petitioner has mentioned that the cases of sexual harassment were on the rise in the state, therefore a unit of special cell of women police should be formed. He has also called for a separate helpline number for the victims.
