New Delhi: Senior advocate and amicus curiae Rajiv Dhavan raised questions in the Supreme Court over the methodology of the Delhi Police to evict yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his supporters from Ramlila Maidan on June 4.

Dhavan urged the Apex Court bench of Justice BS Chauhan and Justice Swatantar Kumar to direct the city police to explain the reasons behind the forceful eviction of yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

The Supreme Court is hearing the matter after it took suo motu cognizance of the articles and reports published in national dailies about the forceful eviction of Ramdev.

Earlier, the Delhi Police had justified the crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his followers at the Ramlila Maidan, saying permission was given only to hold a yoga camp and not a protest.

Going through the history of the high voltage drama that took place on June 4, the bench questioned the police’s role in the forceful eviction of the Yoga guru.

During the hearing, Dhawan said the police had launched a pre-planned action. He wanted to know the reasons behind the police action.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, who was appearing for the Delhi police, said his plea is related only to the incident as per the direction of the Court.

The Apex Court deferred the hearing for September 30 and asked all the parties to submit their replies.
