Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Saturday successfully underwent abdominal surgery at a hospital here, his son Abhishek Bachchan said.

The 69-year-old actor, who has a history of stomach ailments since his intestinal injury on the set of 1982 film ‘Coolie’, was admitted to the Seven Hills hospital in suburban Andheri.

Following the surgery, Abhishek tweeted that all was well.

"Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting," the junior Bachchan tweeted.

Earlier, the doctors also updated the media about the surgery, which has left the actor's millions of fans concerned about his health.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was, sources said, admitted to the hospital late last night. Big B was accompanied with son Abhishek, daughter-in-law Aishwarya and wife Jaya. He was spotted entering the hospital and offering prayers with wife Jaya Bachchan and son Abhishek for seeking seek the blessings in the Balaji temple situated inside the premises.




"He got admitted today morning and he is undergoing surgery right now and the surgery is going on well," a doctor told reporters outside the hospital.

He said that Bachchan had come to the hospital complaining of "pain in the abdomen". Bachchan was examined and he underwent tests and it was found that surgical interventions will relieve him of his problems and the actor agreed.

He, however, refused to give details about the megastar's medical condition, just saying he was stable.

"He is very stable... I will not comment on his medical condition, it is his personal thing. All I can say is that he underwent an abdomen surgery," the doctor said. Bachchan has been updating his fans about his medical condition by regularly blogging details. His latest tweet was from the hospital this morning where he thanked his fans for their wishes and prayers.

The actor wrote on Friday that the latest problem too stemmed from the "Coolie" accident. He had suffered a near fatal injury on July 26, 1982 while filming the scene with co-star Puneet Issar. Bachchan remained in hospital for many months at that time.

He was again admitted to hospital in 2005 and underwent bowel surgery.

"Let me just say that the issue and the problem is a legacy of the past in particular the accident of 1982 and Coolie. Subsequent disturbances have all and shall emanate from it. So I should learn to bear it now," Bachchan wrote on Friday.

Seven Hills is the same hospital where his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby girl last year.

Big B, who has a history of stomach ailments, had written on his blog, "A surgery that I shall be undergoing on the 11th morning and the surgery they say is not too complicated."

He had suffered a near fatal intestinal injury while filming a fight scene in 1982 movie 'Coolie' following which he remained in hospital for many months with fans praying for his well being.

"My stomach which has already been the bed of many complicated battles in the past, shall have to entertain this as well," Bachchan said.

The veteran also thanked his well wishers and fans ahead of the surgery on his blog early this morning.

"I wish to thank all those that have most graciously sent in their concern and greetings for a speedy recovery. Your prayers shall go a long way in bringing me back to normal and for this I am always eternally grateful," he wrote.  Meanwhile, superstar Shahrukh Khan has wished a speedy recovery for Bachchan.

"@SrBachchan sir wish you the best. jaldi hi theek thaak hokar aap aa jayein (get well soon)...my prayers and love to you sir...and a big hug... Nasrun minal lahe wah fatahun kareeb," Shahrukh wrote on Twitter.

SRK and Big B have worked together in quite a few films like 'Mohabbatein', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham', 'Veer Zaara', 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', 'Bhootnath'.
