Tirupati: A police constable of SR Puram police station in Tirupati was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping a dalit girl while in custody. Three police personnel including a sub-inspector, assistant sub-inspector and another constable of the police station were suspended for dereliction of duty.

The arrested constable was presented before a local court after which he was sent to police custody.

As per the sources, the victim was sent to a government hospital in Chittoor for medical examination. The reports are likely to arrive on Thursday.  

As per the complaint lodged by a dalit leader, the victim was brought to the police station for questioning in relation to an elopement case on February 2.But she was not allowed to go back home even after the enquiry was over.

When the victim’s parents came to meet her in the police station, she revealed that the constable had sexually exploited her in custody. The men on duty also refused to lodge FIR of the victim’s parents, sources said.
