Bhopal: The bouquets of flowers will give way to ‘Angavastram’- which will adorn the necks of the winners in any felicitation ceremony in Madhya Pradesh.

In an attempt to promote dying handloom and handicraft and encourage the artisans, the state administration has issued directions to use the hand-woven shawls (Angavastram) instead of traditional bouquets for felicitation during government programmes.

The move by the state administration comes on the heels of Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 felicitation in which the winners were gifted with ‘angavastram’ crafted from the Chanderi fabric instead of traditional bouquet of flowers. Considering the novel initiative during the CWG, the administration has taken the decision to adopt a similar experiment in Madhya Pradesh to encourage traditional crafts and weaving of the state.

The state administration, in this direction, have ordered all the department heads including head of Revenue Division, Collectors, Commissioners , chief officiating officers of Gram Panchayats to gift ‘angavastram’ instead of bouquets.

“The willing departments can place a minimum order of 100 stoles to Madhya Pradesh Hastshilp Hathkargha Vikas Nigam keeping the time limit of three months and accordingly get the logo and names crafted on them,” it said.
