Kumble is arguably India's best spinner with impressive figures of 619 wickets in 132 Test matches to his credit.

Earlier, BCCI had released a statement saying, “At the close of the June 10, 2016, the timeline set for receiving applications for the position of the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team, BCCI has received a total of 57 applications from coaches within India and overseas”.

However, Shastri, Patil, Venkatesh Prasad and Balwinder Singh Sandhu were the only prominent names till then. Entry of Kumble in the competition has come as a surprise and it will be interesting to see who crosses the line with maximum votes.
