New Delhi: The Jadavpur University professor who was arrested on Friday morning for allegedly spreading derogatory messages and cartoons of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the internet was released on bail by the Alipore Court late on Friday.

Ambikesh Mahapatra, a teacher in the Chemistry Department of the Jadavpur University, was attacked by Trinammol Congress workers on Thursday for spreading anti-Mamata sentiments and her derogatory images over the internet and making mockery of the party’s policies.

Mohapatra has been charged with offences under cyber crimes.

“The act of the professor is highly condemnable and we stand by the decision of the party to book him for his defaming act,” said a TMC leader.

"Professor Ambikesh Mohapatra has been arrested for spreading derogatory messages against respectable persons," Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (south suburban division) Sujoy Chanda said.

He, however, refused to divulge the names of the 'respectable persons' who have been defamed in the e-mail. He was arrested and taken to the East Jadavpur Police station early on Friday.
