In fact, sitting MP Anurag is re-seeking elections from Hamirpur. He is already under scanner of enquiry commission over a case related to Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association and to add to his worries, the Congress has fielded a candidate – Rajendra Rana who once happened to be a close aide of his father.

Rana has resigned as MLA from Sujanpur seat and joined hands with the Congress in order to contest against Anurag in Hamirpur. Now the contest on this seat assumes significance and generates interest as well mainly because Rana was quite close to Dhumal and is well-versed to a certain extent with the poll strategies and trend of latter’s game plan.

Though he also held the position of spokesperson in the party, he was expelled from the saffron camp over a hotel-raid case. Since then, the distance between Rana and Dhumal grew wider and he eventually found a new companion in Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Rana is now contesting against his one-time ‘family’.

By-poll is necessitated in Sujanpur due to resignation of Rana. Sujanpur assumes significance for Dhumal family after delimitation. They have lost their ‘hold’ to a certain extent and apart from that, Dhumal is going to contest from Hamirpur in place of former BJP leader Urmil Thakur.

Urmil, a two-time BJP MLA and a former chief parliamentary secretary was shifted to Sujanpur in a losing effort and though it was believed that she would be fielded in the by-polls, the party fielded Narendra Thakur who defected the Congress. Unable to bear this humiliation, Urmil said good bye to BJP.

In fact, the Congress has prepared an arsenal using BJP cartridge and fielded them against the Dhumal family.

All these developments may not bring Dhumal and Anurag in a direct face-off with Congress but they will have to ‘face the wrath’ of its ‘own’ in the Lok Sabha elections.
