Former railway minister and leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge met Speaker Sumitra Mahajan earlier on Thursday to end the speculation in this regard.

Congress chief whip Jyotiraditya Scindia was part of the four-member delegation, which met the Lok Sabha Speaker  four days ahead of the commencement of Budget Session of Parliament.

The Congress has secured 44 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the government sources have said that it was less than the requisite strength of 10 percent of the House.

While there was no word from the Congress, Parliament sources said that a discussion on seating arrangement in the House was decided in the meeting. The arrangement has not been finalized so far due to conflicting stands among various parties.

A senior Congress leader, who refused to be identified, said there was a ‘fit case’ for Congress to be granted the Leader of Opposition post in the Lok Sabha.

The Speaker has to take a call on the Leader of the Opposition issue. Mahajan had earlier said that she would take a decision before the Budget Session after consulting constitutional experts, legal luminaries and ‘experienced’ persons.
