The legendary artist MS Subbulakshmi had performed at the UN in 1966, invited by the then Secretary-General U Thant, becoming the first Indian artist to perform there.

Born in September 1916, M S Subbulakshmi was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. She died at the age of 88 in 2004.

AR Rahman made his debut with Mani Ratnam's Roja in 1992. His work in Danny Boyle's film 'Slumdog Millionaire' fetched him two Oscars, two Grammys, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA.
