The remnants were found when the state police dug a trench to install bollards as part of enhancing the temple security.

The trench, measuring 1.5 m in width and depth, was dug across the road around 50 m away from the gate.

The works were stopped after three granite steps were found on one end of the trench and remains of a foundation on the other end.

The temple hogged worldwide media glare in 2011 as a court-ordered inventory confirmed that its underground vaults contained huge treasures.

The excavation was done till 6 pm on Monday and it will resume on Tuesday.
