Irving (Texas): Arjun Atwal overcame a double bogey start to end with a two-under 68 with the help of four birdies on the opening day of the HP Byron Nelson Championship Golf on the PGA Tour here.

The Indian ace had four birdies, three of them on the back nine on tenth, 14th and 16th and was lying tied 20th, four shots off the leader.

Atwal's putting was the feature as he needed just 24 putts for the round, the second best in the round. That was despite having trouble with his iron play as he reached the greens in regulation just 56 per cent of the times.

Jeff Overton, who was runner-up three times last season, shot a six-under 64 to take the early lead as he played a bogey-free round yesterday.

Sergio Garcia, who withdrew from a British Open qualifier this week because of an infected fingernail on his left hand, was in a group of nine players two strokes back after opening

Garcia, the 2004 Nelson champion who hasn't won since 2008, had only one bogey.

Dustin Johnson, who played with Garcia, was in the group at 66 along with Jeff Quinney, Scott Piercy, Will Strickler, Chris Riley, Josh Teater, Joe Ogilvie and Keegan Bradley.
