“What happened to the youngster from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi is saddening & shocking. No place for such gruesome acts in our nation,” Modi said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Nido Tania, the son of a Congress MLA in Arunachal Pradesh, was found dead inside his room on Thursday. He had allegedly been beaten up by some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar after he broke a window pane there when he was mocked over his hairstyle.

The BJP has demanded a thorough probe into the incident and asked Delhi government to take strict action against the attackers and police and ensure steps for the safety of students from the region.

"The death of a North-East student in New Delhi after being beaten up is barbaric and condemnable. Such incidents do not help us as a nation," BJP leader Arun Jaitley earlier said.

Condemning the incident, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "It is very unfortunate. Delhi government should take adequate steps to ensure the safety of students of North-Eastern states studying in Delhi."

Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari has also condemned the killing and demanded a thorough probe.

Expressing deep shock over the incident, BJP's North-East Sampark Cell convener Sunil Deodhar demanded a probe into the brutal act and strict action against the attackers as well as police for their alleged inaction.

Making a fervent appeal to the people of North-East to not give this incident a racist colour, he made a strong appeal to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to take a serious action against those responsible for the crime.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case of murder in connection with the death of Tania as the incident sparked a furore with allegations of discrimination against people from the region.

Two shopkeepers were arrested last evening in the case as police faced flak for alleged inaction. The Delhi government also recommended a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The relatives of the youth, who was a BA first year student at a private university, alleged that he had an altercation with some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi on Wednesday after they made fun of his hairstyle, following which they allegedly thrashed him.
