Ahmedabad: Self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu on Monday sparked controversy by saying that the December 16 Delhi gang rape victim is as guilty as those responsible for the barbaric sexual assault on her.

“Only 5-6 people are not the culprits. The victim is as guilty as her rapists. She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop. This could have saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap? I don't think so,” Asaram Bapu said.

According to reports, the spiritual guru also opposed harsher punishments for the accused as the law could be misutilised. “We have often seen such laws are made to be misused. Dowry harassment law is the biggest example."

The spiritual guru’s remark comes at a time when the entire nation is mourning the death of the 23-year-old brave heart who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days later after the heinous crime.

Earlier, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had sparked controversies on two occasions. First, while speaking at an event in Silchar Bhagwat had said, “Crimes against women happening in urban India are shameful. Such crimes won't happen in Bharat or the rural areas of the country. You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gang rape or sex crimes. Where 'Bharat' becomes 'India' with the influence of western culture, these type of incidents happen.”

Subsequently, while speaking at another occasion in Indore, he had said, “A husband and wife are involved in a contract under which the husband has said that you should take care of my house and I will take care of all your needs. So, the husband follows the contract terms. Till the time, the wife follows the contract, the husband stays with her, if the wife violates the contract, he can disown her.”

Meanwhile, the five accused of the brutal gang rape case were on Monday produced in a Delhi court. A fast track court in Delhi had on Saturday took cognizance of the chargesheet filed against the five accused. The court had asked the Delhi Police to produce all the five accused, Ram Singh, Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur on January 7.

Delhi Police in its chargesheet filed in the Saket metropolitan magistrate court against five men arrested slapped murder, gang rape, attempt to murder, kidnapping, unnatural offences, dacoity, hurting in committing robbery, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and common intention under the several sections of Indian Penal Code.

The sixth accused is a juvenile and proceedings against him will be conducted by the Juvenile Justice Board. Notably, the victim's father had on Sunday demanded that the juvenile be hanged like the other five accused.

The victim, a physiotherapy student, was gang-raped in a moving bus on December 16 night last year. She died on December 29 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
