He was also an erudite Sanskrit scholar who had several books to his credit, he said conveying his condolences to the bereaved family and praying for the departed soul.
"A popular leader, he was deeply concerned with the welfare of the people. His contribution towards the growth and development of Odisha will be remembered for all time to come. The void created by his death will be hard to fill," Gogoi said.

The chief minister said he had a close rapport with Patnaik and he endeared all by his amiable disposition. 89-year old Patnaik passed away this morning in Tirupati and the Assam government declared half holiday for all state government offices and undertakings from 1 pm on Tuesday.
The national flag will be flown half mast here and district and sub-divisional headquarters of the state as a mark of respect for the departed soul, an official release said.

However, emergency services and other programmes already scheduled on a state scale would be exempted, it said.
