New Delhi: Four people, who allegedly assaulted Jadavpur University Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, were released on bail within hours of their arrest.

The four granted bail by the Alipore court are: are Amrit Sardar, Arup Mukherjee, Nishikanda Ghorai, Sheikh Mustafa. Two of them -- Amrit Sardar and Arup Mukherjee -- are allegedly Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers. They were arrested following the Professor’s complaint of alleged attack on him on Thursday night.

Ambikesh Mahapatra, in his complaint, has alleged that he was attacked by 15 men on Thursday night.   He has filed complaint against two TMC workers on Saturday citing death threat.

Mahapatra, a teacher in the Chemistry Department of the Jadavpur University, was attacked by Trinammol Congress workers on Thursday for spreading anti-Mamata sentiments and her derogatory images over the internet and making mockery of the party’s policies.

Mohapatra was charged with offences under cyber crimes. He will be produced in the court later on Friday.

“The act of the professor is highly condemnable and we stand by the decision of the party to book him for his defaming act,” said a TMC leader.
